Mindanao, island of the Philippines, the southernmost of the country's major islands. It has a population of 14,536,000 (1990). The chief cities are Zamboanga, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro. The island is irregular in shape and the coastline is marked with many bays and headlands. Mindanao is mountainous and covered with forests of teak, ironwood, cypress, and ebony. The soil is exceedingly rich. Gold, copper, iron, and coal are the chief mineral resources. Stock farming is the most important economic activity.
